Hopefully someone will start curating a list of vehicles that do (or do not, either way) have mechanisms for phoning home. If your car can’t call back to the automaker, it can’t spy on you. (Hopefully.)

This post on Hacker News has some interesting discussions around figuring out what electronics in your car might be worth pulling.

Maybe I won’t be buying that brand new Fiata next year.

Okay, but what happens when one of these cars goes into space, is uplifted by an advanced robotic alien society, and then comes back and threatens to destroy Earth because it can’t communicate with GM?
/insert Plymouth V’GER joke here

I really wonder the validity to this claim.

A few years ago, I’d have dismissed that as nonsense. Now, it’s sadly much easier to envision.
Think how easy it would be to bury that in the pile of paperwork you have to sign to buy a car.

I can envision it, but I could also see some serious backlash, enough to the point where they would refrain from forcing you to agree to data collection.

Next time I buy a new car (which would be the first time, actually) I’m going to make the poor salesperson miserable by reading everything they give me to sign.

My cars don’t even have
ODB-II connectors
so they wouldn’t be following my doings. My brother’s car does have some kind of SOS button functionality. He nor I have no idea if the button

What? Most people don’t care about this sort of thing at all. They use Gmail, post everything to Facebook, and carry a cellphone around everywhere.

The automaker has no need to know what podcasts I listen to. They don’t need to know whether I have a fondness for talk radio.
I don’t need them to remind me when I’m driving past that I usually stop at a certain bar and here’s a coupon for a free beer, especially if I’m on a first date at the time.

I’m pretty sure any car sold today has the capability to phone home, and thanks to the DMCA you pretty much have to take the manufacturer at their word on whether it does.
What do you do about your cellphone? As long as its radio is on , it’s tracking you, and your telco sells that data via third parties with questionable security practices: https://money.cnn.com/2018/05/18/technology/cell-phone-location-data-breach-locationsmart/index.html

Yeah, I know, not happy about that either. I trust Apple’s interests and mine are in reasonable alignment, but Verizon, ugh.

In Finland a free beer is an offer that we don’t ever see. It might actually even be illegal to offer one. We are v e r y strict about alcohol regulations.
